Rules of Hold’em

Before cards are dealt

A dealer button is used to represent the position of the dealer. This button will rotate clockwise after each hand. The small blind is posted by the player on the left of the dealer and the big blind is posted by the player on his left. The big blind is twice as much as the small blind and serves as the minimum bet.

Pre-flop

After the blinds are posted, each player is given two cards face down (known as hole cards). The player to the left of the big blind is the first to act (otherwise known as Under the Gun). Then it continues clockwise. A round of betting continues until every player has folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all other players.

Flop

Assuming there are two or more players still in the hand, the dealer deals a flop which includes three face-up community cards. The flop is followed by a second betting round beginning with the player to the dealer’s left and moving in a clockwise manner.

Turn

A fourth community card is dealt which is followed by a third betting round.

River

The fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by the fourth and final betting round.

Showdown

If two or more players remain after the final betting round, then a showdown occurs. Each player plays the best five-card hand he can make from the seven cards comprising his two hole cards and the five community cards.
